TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A Tucson mom accused of burning her five-year-old daughter in hot bath water at their northwest side home told emergency dispatchers she didn’t realize the water was too hot.

On Wednesday, Tucson News Now obtained a newly released 9-1-1 call transcript detailing what Samantha Osteraas is essentially calling an accident.

Samantha Osteraas told dispatchers “She’s like staring into space. Please, baby. Why didn’t you tell me it was too hot? Why didn’t you say something? I’m here honey.”

However, Pima County Sheriff’s Deputies said the girl’s hot-water burns were not due to an accident. According to documents, the five-year old girl was in almost 130 degree water and had burns on 75 percent of her body.

Osteraas has been charged with two counts of child abuse.

She was arrested on January 5 and was released from jail nearly three weeks later.

However, while in jail, a group of female inmates attacked her.

A newly released incident report showed at least three women held her arms, punched her in the face multiple times, pulled her hair, and tried to hold
her feet while she was on the top bunk bed.

The deputy asked Osteraas if she knew why anyone would want to assault her. She told him it was because “her case was recently viewed on the news and people were angry with her charges.”

She’s expected to appear in court on April 17.
