TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Just as the Tucson Unified School District governing board was set to vote on a new interim superintendent, the candidate backed out.

Maggie Shafer was set to be appointed at a special meeting Friday.

The TUSD governing board had planned to not only vote for her, but also for Teri Melendez as interim deputy superintendent.

Shafer is a former superintendent assistant, and Melendez is a former district administrator.

But Shafer pulled out of the running last minute, according to Board Member Adelita Grijalva.

Grijalva says the board has not discussed what will happen next.

Grijalva added she believes the meeting has been canceled, however, the TUSD school board still has the meeting listed for Friday night.
