Tucson, AZ (KOLD) - Arizona head softball coach Mike Candrea had no idea there were a couple of special guests in the crowd Sunday at Hillenbrand Stadium until after Arizona run-ruled Stanford 9-1. It was then he learned that former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly were in attendance, sitting behind home plate the Wildcats dismantle the Cardinal. Afterwards, Candrea brought the team over to meet the couple and say thank you.
While everyone knew of Giffords only a handful of the roster had been living in Arizona on that fateful January 8th morning when Giffords was shot during a Congress On Your Corner event in front of a Southern Arizona Safeway. Among them was Scottsdale native Tamara Statman who was in middle school in 2011. Statman's major is political science. One of her aspirations is to become the President of the United States. However, as you will hear above, for Statman, meeting Giffords was less about politics and more about the lesson one learns from Giffords' inspirational spirit.
