NOGALES, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is working on a pilot program to alleviate traffic congestion for people driving across the border.

More lanes will be opened at the Mariposa Port of Entry for the next two weeks.

Border officials said the traffic at the Mariposa port is not the issue, the problem is the traffic at the DeConcini Port of Entry.

Starting at 6 a.m. Monday, Oct.30, additional lanes will be open.

The exact number of lanes will depend on traffic.

Border officials hope this will encourage drivers to us this Mariposa crossing more.

This pilot program will only be open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. for the next two weeks.

Once this trial period is over, border officals will re-evaluate the program to see if this is something they would like to do permanently.
