VENTURA COUNTY, CA (RNN) – One man braved the flames of the Thomas Fire in Southern California to save a wild rabbit caught in the blaze.

Video of Wednesday night’s daring rescue shows a highway engulfed by smoke and flames, the sky orange, as a young man chases a rabbit by the side of the road.

The anonymous man, wearing just shorts and a hoodie, panics as the rabbit darts into a burning bush, CNN reports.

Trying to coax the rabbit to him, the man jumps up and down, calling to the creature, until the rabbit finally runs out again.

The man then gently lifts the rabbit and carries it away from the flames.

Twitter users are calling the man a hero and thanking him for working so hard to save the rabbit.

According to ABC News, the news photographer who captured the scene asked the unnamed man for an on-camera interview, but he declined.
