Marana police increases patrols for holiday shopping

MARANA, AZ (Tucson News Now) - As you are finishing your holiday shopping, you may spot more patrols at some of your favorite stores.

It's all part of the Marana Police Department's annual operation "Holiday Patrols."

The police department places officers at big-box retailers like Target, Walmart and the Tucson Premium Outlet Mall off Interstate 10.

The goal is to keep shoppers safe during a time when thieves take advantage of unaware shoppers.

The police department has been conducting the operation for years and say it's proven to be successful in the past. Police hope high visibility deters criminals.

Here are some tips to stay safe this holiday season:

  • Lock your car doors
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Park in a well-lit area
  • Don’t carry large amounts of cash
  • Hide gifts in your trunk
  • Report suspicious activity to police

The extra patrols will be in place until the day after Christmas.
