DOUGLAS, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Douglas Police Department said a person was detained Thursday morning after an accused drug smuggler's shipment went up in smoke.

Around 10:30 a.m., a resident called the DPD to report the smell of burnt marijuana coming from an SUV.

The still-smoking vehicle was located and officers called in the Douglas Fire Department for help.

"As officers checked on the occupant of the vehicle, it began to catch on fire," the DPD said in a news release.

Officers said they found several marijuana packages, some of which had caught fire, in the vehicle's engine compartment

"(We) would like to thank the concerned motorist for reporting this incident, which led to the discovery of marijuana and the detention of the driver," the DPD said. "If you have any questions or concerns about suspicious activity, call us at 520-417-7550."

The driver of the vehicle has not been identified and the investigation is ongoing.
