GILA BEND, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

According to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, one person shot and one person was detained after a shooting in the desert east of Gila Bend late Thursday night.

MCSO said deputies responded to the area of milepost 135 on I-8 for a call of a man reporting he and a friend were shot while walking through the desert.

The caller was shot in the leg and was separated from his friend. He was transported to a local hospital after a helicopter located him and flew him to waiting ground units.

MCSO said it was discovered there was a third person in the group. They were found and detained.

Authorities located a cell phone and rifle from the scene but have not found any suspects.

I-8 was closed in both directions at milepost 135 east of Gila Bend for the police incident, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

It has since been reopened. However, some lane restriction are in place.

The scene on I-8 is now clear but police will be returning after 9 a.m. with helicopters and more ground crews to search the area.

The investigation is still active and ongoing.

MCSO said the highway was shut down for their helicopter and crews to land.

Eastbound drivers were taking State Route 85 northbound in Gila Bend to Interstate 10 eastbound. Westbound drivers were taking State Route 84 northbound, which is south of Maricopa, to State Route 347 northbound to I-10 westbound into the Valley.
