NOGALES, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A Phoenix couple attempted to smuggle meth into the country while traveling with their young child, federal authorities said.

Nogales Station Border Patrol agents arrested the couple Friday, Feb. 23, at the Interstate 19 immigration checkpoint.

According to a news release issued by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, a 22-year-old male and 24-year-old female were traveling with their 4-year-old child when agents checked their vehicle and found 6 1/2 pounds of methamphetamine.

Agents said they found the drugs, estimated to be worth more than $22,400, in the car's spare tire.

The case was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations and the child was released to a family member.

Both individuals were U.S. citizens.
