BB: Catalina off to best start in seven years

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Starting pitcher Alex Phillips struck out nine batters Saturday night to lead Catalina to an 11-4 win over Cibola in the championship game of the Coaches for Charity Invitational at Amphi High School.

Jonah Lauten had three hits and three RBI for the Trojans (7-0).

Phillips and Vinny Rifici both drove in a pair of runs for Catalina, who cruised thru pool play with wins over Desert View, Douglas and El Paso (TX) El Dorado.

The Trojans beat the host Amphi Panthers 17-6 Saturday afternoon to advance to the final.

The seven straight wins to begin the season are the best start for Catalina since they won the Class 4A Division II state title in 2011. The Trojans have not had a winning season since.
