Arizona prisons tighten restrictions on book donations

FLORENCE, Ariz. (AP) - The Arizona prison system has tightened its rules for donated books, restricting who can send books to specific inmates.

The Casa Grande Dispatch reports the Arizona Department of Corrections has authorized only publishers to send books directly to individual inmates.

The Tucson-based nonprofit Read Between the Bars has been sending more than 200 books each month to inmates for years.

The organization previously received letters from inmates, telling staff what kind of books they want. It then would mail three free books to that inmate.

The group says that it was barred last summer from sending books to individual inmates.

Department spokesman Andrew Wilder says books may still be donated prisons, but not to individual inmates. The donated books are placed in prison libraries for inmates to access.
