Cochise Co. Sheriff's Office reporting new Facebook scam

COCHISE COUNTY, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

There have been several calls recently to the Cochise County Sheriff's Office in regards to a new scam that is happening on Facebook.

According to the CCSO, the callers stated receiving a message on their Facebook account that appears to come from someone they know and who is on their friend list, but is not their friend.  This "friend" advises the person that they are being offered a grant in any amount up to $500,000.

If they are interested, the victim is asked to call a phone number because they are eligible for the award.  However, once the victim calls the number they are told to go to Walmart and purchase either gift or Moneypak cards to cover delivery, insurance, and tax fees for the grant.

According to the CCSO news release, one person has lost $500 to this scam already.

They are advising the public, if it seems to good to be true, then it probably is.  Do not fall victim to this scam.
