ADOT receives federal grant for SR-189 improvements

NOGALES, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Arizona Department of Transportation was given a $25 million grant to aid in an improvement project along SR-189.

The road connects the Mariposa Port of Entry to I-19.

Thousands of commercial trucks drive the route every year and some say it can’t handle the amount of traffic. ADOT is hoping the changes help with traffic flow, along with making the road safer.

The improvements include flyover ramps that’ll let cars go directly from SR-189 to I-19. ADOT also plans to build a bridge near Frank Reed Road, the road leading to Nogales High School.

Other changes include roundabouts and raised medians.

Tucson Mayor Rothschild says long wait times along the route is putting the Mariposa Port at a disadvantage. He’s hoping these improvements will change that.

“The wait times are long, and if you’re a commercial transporter, of course that’s something you don’t want. And if you can drive four hours further but get to the port quicker you would do that. So now the real idea of this is that that logjam going north into Arizona will be reduced substantially,” he said.

Before receiving the grant, ADOT planned to make improvements in phases. The department says the $25 million will let them do the project all at once and two years ahead of schedule.

ADOT plans to begin work next summer.

20 years ago, residents on Thornydale were promised a four lane road along with pedestrian sidewalks and bike paths. That promise was never kept because the money for the project was allocated somewhere else. So Thornydale, North of Cortaro Farms Road, which carries nearly 30,000 cars a day, deteriorated until it is what it is today, a failed road.
