A low-income neighborhood in Cochise County will have a much needed grocery store, following the applicant’s approval by the Planning & Zoning Commission.
Graciela Romero Salas requested a Special Use Permit to build a 5,000 sq. ft. store on a vacant property zoned residential in the rural community of Winchester Heights, near Willcox.
“It’s a very poor area with a lot of homes in disrepair,” Planner Robert Kirschmann told the Commission at its monthly meeting on Wednesday. “There are not many services in that area, so this would be a benefit to the community.”
There is currently one other grocery outlet in Winchester Heights, home to mainly agricultural workers, and the owner supports having another business nearby, Kirschmann added.
The store will be located at 5835 MacDonald Drive and will provide three to six jobs.
The Special Use Permit was approved unanimously by the Commission.
