COCHISE COUNTY, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The Housing Authority of Cochise County will open its waiting list in April to local residents who need help with home rental costs.
The federally-funded Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program, administered by the County, is restricted to just 493 households.
Rental assistance is provided based upon low income criteria but, due to the number of people requesting aid, there is a permanent waiting list, which is also limited.
"The last time we opened the waiting list was in July 2016," Housing Authority Executive Director Anita Baca said in a recent news release. "Unfortunately, we have to limit our numbers to make it a manageable amount."
The waiting list will be open between April 2 and April 16 and the Housing Authority will have representatives at three locations in Sierra Vista, Benson, and Willcox, to answer questions and hand out applications.
Around $220,000, provided through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, is paid monthly to residents in Cochise and Graham Counties. Tenants are required to pay a portion of their rent, based upon the household composition and their income.
Preference is given to those whose goal is to become economically self-sufficient, to the elderly and disabled, and the chronically homeless.
Housing Authority staff will be at the following locations between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. to assist applicants:
- April 3 – Cochise County Benson Service Center, 126 W. 5th Street, 2nd Floor Waiting Room
- April 4 – Cochise County Health & Social Services, 450 S. Haskell Avenue, Suite E
- April 5 – Cochise County Sierra Vista Service Center, 4001 E. Foothills Drive
Applications, which must be submitted by 5 p.m. on April 16, are also available at 1415 Melody Lane, Building A, Suite 100, Bisbee, or online at www.cochise.az.gov/housing-authority/home
