SONOITA, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on Wednesday morning, March 21 to approve Resolution 2018-02 to abolish the Santa Cruz County Justice of the Peace, Precinct #2 and redraw the Santa Cruz County Justice of the Peace, Precinct #1 precinct boundaries, effective Jan. 1, 2019.

The board was originally scheduled to vote on whether to close the courthouse during a meeting Wednesday, Feb. 21, but the board delayed making a decision until Wednesday.

Santa Cruz County Manager Jennifer St. John proposed closing the court as a cost-cutting measure, saving the county about $200,000.

However, people in the area argued closing the courthouse is not the answer.

With the Sonoita closure, a courthouse in Nogales would serve all of Santa Cruz County.
