PIMA COUNTY, AZ ( Tucson News Now) - Rural Metro Fire Department named Captain Richard Duarte as its Fire Officer of the Year for 2018.

The announcement was made Sunday evening, March 25, in a news release from Battalion Chief John Walka.

Captain Duarte was chosen among a large range and variety from Rural Metro Fire Operations around the country, including Arizona, Oregon, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Missouri.

"Captain Duarte was chosen for this prestigious award for his exemplary leadership skills and abilities both in the field, training and administratively. Many times Captain Duarte has sacrificed his own personal comfort and convenience and even his own safety to ensure his own crew and customers would stay safe," Walka said in the news release.

Rural Metro Fire Department has been providing fire and emergency medical services in Pima County since 1962, according to its website.

The department has eight fire stations and is the sole fire protection agency for numerous unincorporated communities in Pima County, including the Catalina Foothills, Sahuarita, Hidden Valley, Sabino Vista, Tanque Verde, and Tucson Country Club Estates.
