Researchers discover new organ in human body

The Interstitium The Interstitium
NEW YORK (Tucson News Now) -

A new discovery by the New York University School of Medicine turned the world of medicine upside down this week.

A study published in Scientific Reports on Tuesday stated that a new organ, previously unknown to researchers, has been discovered in the human body.

Being dubbed, "The Interstitium," the organ is said to be a thin, meshy layer of connective tissue throughout the body that lies just under the skin and in the lining of most vital organs. A gel substance supposedly fills the passages of the organ and acts as a shock absorber for the vital organs.

In an interview with The Daily Beast, medical researcher Niel Theise, indicated that the Interstituim and its gel could be the reason for the energetic feeling brought by acupuncture.

He also added that, "the fluid-filled backroads could explain the metastasis [growth] of cancer cells and their quick spread beyond the limits of the organ in which the cancer started."

The most surprising part? The new organ might be the largest organ by volume (10 liters) out of all 80 in the body.

While more research is sure to be conducted, this initial study could be the start of a huge breakthrough in medicine and cancer research.
