UPDATE: One of the hawks with a trap attached to its leg has been safely recovered by rescue crews. The search for the second hawk is still ongoing.

Over the weekend, the Tucson Wildlife Center said animal rescue teams were searching for two hawks reportedly seen flying with traps attached to their legs.

TWC said a Harris's hawk was seen in Vail with a steel-jaw trap clamped to his leg. The second hawk, a Cooper’s hawk, was seen flying around Reid Park in Tucson with a wooden rodent trap on his leg.

TWC said if located, rescue crews will safely remove the traps and the hawks can be treated for injuries at the Center’s wildlife hospital.

“Leg hold traps are cruel and indiscriminate,” said Lou Rae Whitehead, animal care supervisor at Tucson Wildlife Center.

“They don’t always catch what a trapper is after and animals caught suffer needlessly. It is also illegal to use them on public land and without staking them to the ground.”

Anyone with information of the birds whereabouts is asked to call the Tucson Wildlife Center at 520-290-9453.
