Excelling performance by DeGrazia Chess Team qualifies teams for State

MARANA, AZ (Tucson News Now) - DeGrazia Elementary School's Chess Teams demonstrated excelling performances at the Arizona Southern Regional State Qualifying Chess Team Championships on March 24, 2018. Not only did teams and students win trophies but both the Primary and the Elementary Team qualified to compete at the 2018 Arizona State Chess Team Championships to be held on April 14-15 in Gilbert, Arizona.

By using skillful chess tactics, Christian  Yepiz, Caleb Larcom, Noah Hart, and Vincent Nguyen earned the first place team trophy in the primary qualifying division. Christian won four out of five games to earn an individual trophy and Caleb won three out of five games to earn a medallion.

The Elementary team of Stephen Somogyi, Brandon Taylor, Jacob Hart, and Jerimiah White earned the second place team trophy in the elementary qualifying division. Stephen and Brandon both earned medallions by winning three out of five rounds of chess.
