Mario Kempe's goal with 3:10 to play Friday night gave the Tucson Roadrunners a 3-2 win over San Diego at Tucson Arena.
The victory clinched the Roadrunners (41-20-5-1) as the AHL's Western Conference regular season champions.
The club will now have home ice advantage through the first three rounds of the playoffs.
The win also locked up the I-8 Border Cup, the rivalry trophy for the series against San Diego, in its first year of existence.
The series is awarded by points. Tucson leads 13-10 having won six of the 11 meetings this season.
Kempe finished the night with two goals. Dysin Mayo added the other tally for Tucson.
Goaltender Adin Hill picked up the win in net for Tucson, stopping 24-of-26 shots from San Diego (36-22-3-1).
The regular season comes to an end on Saturday night with a 7 p.m. faceoff against the Gulls at the Arena.
