BB: Sabercats shutout Lions and now wait for state run

ORO VALLEY, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Sabino junior Preston Clifford pitched a complete-game two-hit shutout Thursday afternoon at Pusch Ridge Christian Academy in leading the Sabercats to a 6-0 regular season-ending win over the Lions.

Clifford (7-0) struck out seven and walked four. The junior has struck out seven or more in all nine of his starts this season.

Top-ranked Sabino (25-3, 12-0) broken open a 1-0 game with five runs in their final two at-bats.

They had already clinched the Conference 3A South Section championship but the victory allowed the Sabercats to finish league play unbeaten.

Unfortunately, now their regular season is over and Sabino must wait till May 4, 15 days, to begin what the Sabercats hope will be a run to a state championship.

Robert Summerville (4-4) was solid on the mound for PRCA in a losing cause. He pitched six and a third innings allowing three runs on six hits while striking out five.

The Lions (16-8, 3-7) entered the game ranked 16th in Conference 3A and while Sabino’s season is over PRCA still has two league game remaining against Santa Rita on Friday and Empire next Tuesday.

The Sabercats are joined in the Conference 3A Top 10 by three of their section rivals. Sahuarita is currently ranked 4th while Catalina and Empire come in at 6th and 9th respectively.
