TUCSON, AZ - No. 8 Arizona State walked off with a 2-1 victory in game 1 of the three-game series against No. 13 Arizona Softball on Friday evening at Farrington Stadium.
The Sun Devils had two hits against Taylor McQuillin (19-9), a home run in the fourth and a walkoff double in the bottom of the seventh.
McQuillin (19-9) struck out 10.
Ashleigh Hughes hit a leadoff homer in the top of the first, but it would be the only production in the game for the UA offense.
ASU's G Juarez (19-2) retired the final 15 Wildcats; she struck out 13.
Juarez is the Pac-12's leader in strikeouts and ERA (0.74)
Arizona (29-13, 6-10) and Arizona State (35-7, 9-4) Pac-12. meet again on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 5 p.m. MST.
2nd ranked Stanford used a five-run seventh inning to come from 2-0 down and topped Arizona Baseball 8-2 in the series opener Friday night at Hi Corbett Field.
The loss dropped Arizona to 23-13 on the season and 6-7 in Pac-12 Play. Stanford, ranked No. 2 in the country, improved to 28-5 and 10-3 in league play.
Alec Wilson's solo home run to right field off starter Cody Deason (4-3), his first long ball of the season, broke a 2-2 tie.
Andrew Daschbach and Kyle Stowers hit back-to-back home runs in the 9th off Robby Medel
Donta Williams and Alfonso Rivas drove in the Wildcats' runs.
The Cats and Cardinal will continue their three-game series Saturday night at 7 p.m. UA will honor longtime national champion head coach Jerry Kindall before and throughout the game.
