TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - There's a new solution if you've having trouble with parking around the University of Arizona.
Ironically, it comes from two students at Arizona State University.
Air Garage launched in Tucson a couple of weeks ago. Since then, several dozen people have started renting out extra parking spots at their home or driveways near campus to make some quick cash and help students in the process.
U of A student, Essence Guthrie, knows the struggle all too well to find parking before class.
Guthrie said, "Sometimes you're lucky and you get a parking spot close to campus, but sometimes you're looking for a parking spot for 15 minutes or so."
Sometimes it's necessary for students to make a small hike to class for free, when parking prices are steep.
"They're willing to walk 20 minutes in the heat," said Guthrie.
It's things like this that inspired two ASU students to find a solution.
Jonathon Barkl and his business partner invented Air Garage, a website and soon to be app that connects drivers to unused parking spots.
Businesses, churches, and homeowners can rent out their extra spots or driveways.
It's not entirely new. Homeowners near the U of A, like Terry Lane, have done something similar during big sporting events.
After years of renting out his space for fans, Lane said people will often pay a pretty penny for a good space.
"It's pretty good, we still do it for the football games," said Lane.
Barkl and his partner hope to see that kind of success. Since it's launch locally, 60 spots have been listed for anywhere between $20 and $75 a month.
In the Phoenix area, there are hundreds of spaces available.
Barkl only wants to see it grow from here, "We see ourselves taking this to universities across the country in the near future, and really trying to expand it to events and downtown areas. Places where there is this chronic problem of parking."
Air Garage hopes to continue easing the parking pressure for people everywhere.
For students like Guthrie, it's an alternative she says she would consider.
"If it's cheaper than parking on campus, I would definitely use someone's driveway - if there's an app for that," she said.
