Sierra Vista police arrest Tucson man in fatal van versus bicycle collision

SIERRA VISTA, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Sierra Vista Police Department has arrested the driver of a van that struck and killed a bicyclist riding on the shoulder of Buffalo Soldier Trail just south of Garden Avenue at about 1:36 p.m. Tuesday, May 8. 

The driver, identified as 31-year-old Tucson resident Jared McDonald, faces charges that include second-degree murder, negligent homicide, manslaughter, and driving under the influence of an intoxicating drug. 

SVPD detectives and accident reconstruction specialists found evidence indicating the bicyclist, identified as 71-year-old Hereford resident David Alva, was traveling southbound on the shoulder of Buffalo Soldier Trail when the driver of a white 2003 Dodge Caravan left the roadway and struck him. Alva was pronounced dead at the scene.

McDonald was arrested at the scene. The investigation indicates that McDonald was under the influence of an intoxicating drug. McDonald was booked into the Cochise County Jail on the following charges: second-degree murder, negligent homicide, manslaughter, possession of drug paraphernalia, tampering with evidence, and DUI drugs.
