A campaign launched Wednesday afternoon, May 16, hopes to promote internet safety among people across southern Arizona.

State Attorney General Mark Brnovich announced the effort at the Northwest YMCA in partnership with Comcast and Telemundo.

The initiative will be a combination of public service announcements, in-person training, and educational resources such as videos, brochures and booklets.

The program hopes to focus on those most at risk of being targeted by online scammers, including senior citizens and young adults.

Senior citizens will be trained by teens from the YMCA on how to navigate through social media. Charles Brandt, a retired teacher, said he plans to take advantage of the services being offered.

“The young people, they grew up using computers, and they feel, I think, more confident. And because we didn’t grow up with computers, we don’t have those feelings. So I think this is going to help the older population. I’m looking forward to it,” he said.
