TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - A bicyclist sent to the hospital after being hit by a car in midtown Tucson Monday night has died from his injuries.

According to family members and the Tucson Police Department, 54-year-old Santiago Diaz Jr. passed away Wednesday morning, June 6, after the decision was made to take him off life support.

The crash happened just before 10:00 p.m. near the intersection of Country Club Road and East 4th Street on Monday night.

Officers at the scene had blocked off traffic on Country Club in both directions for most of the evening as they investigated the collision. They said the driver of the black sedan that hit Diaz Jr. while he was on his bicycle remained at the scene and was cooperating with police.

Based on information and evidence gathered at the scene, by TPD officers, they were able to determine that Diaz was riding eastbound across Country Club from 4th St. He crossed the southbound lanes of traffic and was attempting to head northbound (left turn) on Country Club. After passing the first northbound lane, he entered the curb lane and was struck by a northbound 2003 Infinity G35.

Diaz was not wearing a helmet, according to the TPD.

Neither speed nor impairments appear to be factors in the collision. According to TPD, no citations or arrests have been issued at this time.
