TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Tucson's largest school district hosted a town hall meeting about school climate and safety at its schools on Tuesday, June 5.

Officials with Tucson Unified School District said they hoped to ease the minds of parents in light of recent events like the shootings at schools in Texas and Florida.

The forum is a continuation of other similar meetings the district has held in the past.

The conversation focused on safety, student discipline and the overall atmosphere at schools.

During the safety portion, district officials went over procedures in place – including staff training, law enforcement partnerships and safety systems at schools.

Parents will also have the chance to give feedback on the updated Student Code of Conduct guidelines.

Some big changes included how the district disciplines students who get in fights or get caught using drugs.

Julianna Melton put her kids through TUSD schools and now as a grandmother is sending her grandkids. She said some of her biggest concerns are bullying and student mental health.

“I tell my husband, 'You know where all this starts, the children’s behavior.' And I think they need to focus on kids who are having problems and start with those that have mental problems,” she said.

She also believes parents should be more involved.

The meeting began at 6 p.m. at the Catalina Magnet High School auditorium.
