UPDATE: The Tucson Police Department arrested a suspect in connection to an apartment fire in midtown on Sunday.
TPD said 41-year-old Albert Maxam was arrested for arson of an occupied structure, criminal damage, and endangerment.
The Tucson Fire Department said multiple residents have been displaced after the fire caused significant damage to units at an apartment complex early Sunday morning.
Around 1:34 a.m. crews from TFD and the Tucson Police Department responded to an apartment fire in the 3900 block of North Stone, TFD said. Upon arrival crews determined that multiple units on the second level of the complex were engulfed in flames.
The fire was called under control in less than 20 minutes after crews first arrived on scene, TFD said.
TFD said residents inside the units had been safely evacuated.
The fire damage was contained to the two second story units though the two bottom floor units did sustain electrical and water damage, TFD said. More than 40 firefighters and 16 units were dispatched to the scene.
One TPD officer was transported to the hospital for precautionary reasons due to smoke inhalation after assisting in evacuation efforts prior to TFD arriving on scene, TFD said.
There were no injuries to firefighters.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
