TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A man accused of killing a couple while intoxicated in 2016 has been convicted.

Alexander Bondy was convicted of two counts of second-degree murder, endangerment, criminal damage and DUI this week.

According to police, in August 2016, Bondy was driving 92 mph down Golf Links Road when he lost control of his car. The car crossed all the northbound lanes, hit the median and went airborne and flew into southbound traffic.

Joel and Mary-Jane Cohen were hit head-on and the entire top of their car was sheared off, according to a police report.

Bondy claimed the collision was caused by a malfunction of his car’s power steering. However, a mechanic examined his car after the collision and could find no issue that might explain what happened.

Bondy will be sentenced on Sept. 14.
